Hilmar J. Schmidt, 65, died at Sartori Memorial Hospital on Wednesday morning, December 3, 1986. He began working for UNI in 1980 and was an electrician in the electrical shop of plant services until his retirement in 1984. 

Funeral services will be Saturday at Fredsville Lutheran Church, west of Cedar Falls at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Fredsville Lutheran Church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for the Fredsville Lutheran Church or the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. 

Hilmar was born October 4, 1921, in Cedar Falls, the son of Hans and Mattie Schmidt. He married Jeanne E. Jensen on January 24, 1943, in Waterloo. Hilmar is survived by his wife, Jeanne; three sons, Captain Robert Schmidt of Valrico, Florida, Captain Richard Schmidt of San Antonio, Texas, and Jeffrey of Waterloo; two daughters, Nancy Zetlmaier of Vancouver, Washington, and Kristi Hayden of Portland, Oregon. Also surviving Hilmar Schmidt is his mother, Mattie Schmidt of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home; a sister, Edna Petersen of Roberts, Wisconsin; and five grandchildren.
