Edward Lyons Edward Francis Lyons was born July 28, 1918, at Olmsted County, Minnesota. He attended the Rochester Junior College from 1936 through 1937. In 1937, he began attending the Iowa State Teachers College. Four years later he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He earned a Master's degree in guidance from Drake University in 1955. From 1941 through 1945, Lyons was a commissioned United States Navy officer in P. T. boats. Then from 1946 through 1947 he was a teacher and coach at the high school in Orient, Iowa. In 1947, Lyons moved to Forest City, where he was a high school teacher and coach until 1956. In 1956, Lyons was hired by the Iowa State Teachers College (later known as UNI) as Assistant Professor of Physical Education for Men and Assistant Football Coach. When Bill Koll took a leave of absence in 1957 to finish a doctorate degree, Lyons filled in as Head Coach of the wrestling team and taught Koll's classes, in addition to coaching football. He led the wrestling squad to an 8-2-1 record for the 1957-58 season. After coaching football the following year at the ISTC, Lyons began coaching at Cedar Falls High School.
