Derek had been coaching collegiate and high school football for fourteen years at schools including: Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Central Community College, Ames High School, St. Cloud State University, Lincoln University, Upper Iowa University, University of Northern Iowa, Western Illinois University, and Missouri Southern State University. Derek was very passionate about teaching men not just about football but about how to be a better student and man off the football field. They enjoyed fishing, fireworks, cooking "Dad's famous burgers", golfing, and watching football. The only thing Derek loved more than being a football coach was being a father to his son Elijah.
