Bernadine "Bern" Nygren, 75, of Waverly, died Thursday, May 22, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo from complications of leukemia. Bern began her career at UNI in 1966 and retired in 1984. She was a Clerk IV in the Benefits Section at the time of her retirement. A competent and professional employee, Bern enjoyed people and found something positive about almost every situation. The one exception was her dislike for computers. Upon retirement, Bern's social calendar was always full. She was born May 27, 1921, in Waverly, daughter of Bernard J. and Anna Hesse Bruns. She married Robert H. Nygren on August 5, 1944, in Arlington, Virginia. He died May 15, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Chuck of Cedar Falls and Richard of Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Nancy Witham of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; a brother, Paul Bruns of California; and three sisters, Alice Bruns of Cedar Falls, Marian Desch of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Elaine Dillin of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by a son, James; and an infant sister. Memorial services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.
