William H. "Bill" Diercks, 85, of Waterloo, died Wednesday. November 8, 2006, at Manor Care, of complications from a stroke. He was born April 17, 1921, in Denver, son of Arthur and Amanda Schutte Diercks. He married Virginia M. "Ginny" Jahnke on June 26, 1947, in Denver. He served his country in the US Army during World War II as a Tec 5 in North Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Mr. Diercks worked in plant services at the University of Northern Iowa, retiring in 1987. He also worked as the carpenter shop supervisor and was the engineering department project manager. He was a journeyman carpenter and worked for a house contractor and then was employed as the Black's Building superintendent from 1963 through 1978. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
Survived by: his wife; a son, David (Kim) of Shell Rock; a daughter, Becky Diercks of Des Moines; two stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Kurtt and Ray Steinberg. Preceded in death by: three sisters, Ethel Matthias, Lorna Hagenow, and Mildred Kurtt; and a brother, Melvin.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services at the church Saturday. Memorials: may be directed to Christian Crusaders, Lutheran Hour Ministries, or Cedar Valley Hospice.
