Verla Arlene Walters, 83, of Shell Rock, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center. She was born September 8, 1921, in Havelock, daughter of George Burns and Florence Hauswirth Hawk. She married Harold Walters on September 26, 1942, and he died December 13, 1968. She married Malvin Tribon on September 2, 1975, in Oran, and they later divorced. Ms. Walters graduated from the Ware Consolidated School, Pocahontas County, in 1939. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught at DMT Country School. She later worked at the University of Northern Iowa Library for several years.
Survivors include: two sons, Lynn Walters of Arkansas and Jim Walters of California; a daughter, Karen Walters of Shell Rock; a brother, Eldon and Eileen Hawk of Plover; and a sister, Avoneli Rutherford of Iowa City. Preceded in death by: a brother, Melvin Hawk, and a sister, LaVon Eloise Hawk in infancy.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Shell Rock United Methodist Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock. Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or to the family.
