Thomas William Hansmeier, 74, of Waukon, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at his home in Waukon. Per his wishes, Thomas was cremated. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Thomas is survived by his wife, Jean Hansmeier of Waukon; a son, Eric (Susan) Hansmeier; a daughter, Wendy (Richard) Sheridan; a brother, Gordon Hansmeier; three sisters, Marilyn Perin, Lorraine Peake, and Maryjo Seaba; plus five grandchildren, Rachael Sheridan, Sarah (Mike) Clavenna, Chris Sheridan, Jessica Hansmeier, and Thomas Hansmeier. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ruth Hansmeier.
Thomas William Hansmeier was born July 9, 1932 to Elmer and Ruth (Sherman) Hansmeier in Waukon. He married Jean Niehaus on December 22, 1956, in Mt. Vernon. He graduated from Waukon High School, received his bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and also earned his doctoral degree from Michigan State University. Thomas was an administrator and professor at the University of Northern Iowa for twenty-three years before his retirement. Prior to his employment with the University of Northern Iowa, he taught at Michigan State University for two years, Kent State University for five years, Southern Illinois University for four years, and at the University of North Dakota for two years. Thomas was a member of the Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, and he also enjoyed volunteer work, golfing, and reading. Memorials may be directed to the Hansmeier family for memorials of their choice. Services by the Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa.
