Campbell Hall was named for one of the most influential women on the Iowa State Teachers College faculty, Sadie B. Campbell. Miss Campbell served as Dean of Women at the Teachers College from 1929 to 1952. She was an exceptional leader who exerted a great influence on the development of the residence hall program. Born in 1892, Miss Campbell graduated from a Colorado high school and received her B. A. degree from Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colorado, in 1919. She went on to earn a master's degree from the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City in 1925. She also completed work towards a doctoral degree at Columbia.
Before coming to the Teachers College, Miss Campbell worked as an intermediate school teacher and a junior high school principal in two Colorado schools. She then served as supervisor of high school instruction at the high school in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. After receiving her master's degree, she became Dean of Girls at a high school in Des Moines, Iowa, where she served until she came to the Teachers College in 1929. Miss Campbell died in 1965.
