Robert A. Hartman has been named director of residence at the University of Northern Iowa, effective March 1, 1994. Mr. Hartman has served the University for more than sixteen years as the associate director of residence/housing. He replaces Clark Elmer, who has become the director of enrollment management and admissions. Prior to coming to UNI, Mr. Hartman was assistant director of residence at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. "Bob's commitment to student development and to a student-centered philosophy will continue to provide and promote a strong foundation for establishing and maintaining departmental goals that directly enhance and enrich the mission of the Division and the University," says Sue Follon, vice president for Educational and Student Services. "I am very pleased that Bob has accepted this position of leadership within the University community."
Coincidentally, Mr. Hartman was recently one of three UNI recipients of the Iowa State Board of Regents' first Staff Excellence Awards. His nominators commended him for having an open door policy with both staff and students, and for going above and beyond what is expected of him. As director of residence, Mr. Hartman will oversee a system that includes four dining centers, ten residence halls with housing and programming for approximately five thousand students, and 365 University apartments. Northern Iowa's residence system has gained a reputation of offering award-winning programs and services, while maintaining the lowest room and board rates among Missouri Valley Conference universities. "The reputation certainly reflects on the leadership and personnel in key positions, as well as the quality of students and other staff, that we have had over the years," says Mr. Hartman. "I'm looking forward to building on that tradition."
