Randy Eccker, assistant basketball coach at Creighton University, has been named assistant basketball coach at the University of Northern Iowa, UNI athletic officials announced today, October 7, 1980. Eccker replaces Dan Breitbach who was named head coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Breitbach was the first fulltime assistant coach at UNI, beginning in 1977, after serving as graduate assistant for two seasons. Eccker, a 1978 graduate of Creighton, also helped with baseball recruiting at the Omaha, Nebraska, school. He played at Creighton under Coach Tom Apke and was named team captain his senior year and was voted to the All Decade Team by Creighton fans. He also played baseball two years. He participated in the rookie-free agent camp with the Denver Nuggets and made the Canadian Athletes in Action basketball team but declined the opportunity in order to concentrate on his coaching. He also has served as a counselor and coach in the Nuggets summer camps and at the University of Colorado. A native of Denver, Colorado, Eccker received his M. S. degree in physical education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha last August.
