Dr. Oscar E. Thompson, 92, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in Carlisle. He was born June 16, 1910, in Roberts County, South Dakota, son of Edward and Anna Leverson Thompson. He married Margaret Ballard on June 6, 1935, in Morehead, Minnesota. She died April 23, 1994. He earned his bachelor's degree at Morehead University and his master's degree at the University of North Dakota. Dr. Thompson spent forty-nine years in education as a teacher, administrator, and as an employee of the Pennsylvania State Department of Education. He served on the faculties of the University of Iowa, where he earned his Ph. D. degree, the University of Wyoming, the University of Northern Iowa for seventeen years, North Dakota State University, Oregon State University, and Shippensburg University. He was past president of the Iowa State Education Association.
Survived by: his wife, Bertha Boyd Thompson of Carlisle; a son, Richard of Tucson, Arizona; a stepdaughter, Donna Boyd Jenkinson of Levittown, Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren.
Graveside committal services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Wednesday at DahlVan Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials: may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Carlisle.
