William Henry Merner (1868-1945) was born in Canada. He moved with his family to Cedar Falls in 1875.
He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1894 and married Lillian Mathias in 1896.
Mr. Merner was elected mayor of Cedar Falls in 1905. He served for two terms.
Box 1 has a speech Mr. Merner gave in honor of Professor Avey in 1917, several statements he made publicly when he was involved in the dispute about whether there should be a continuation of student teaching in 1919, and a letter to him seeking his assistance in school-related matters, also in 1919. There is also a 1965 letter from Iowa State Teachers College president James Maucker offering this material to then-librarian Mary Dieterich.
Box 2 contains 20 glass-plate photographic slides with scenes from Cedar Falls and Iowa State Teachers College.
