Historical Note

Little is known about Mr. Seals, not even his birth or death dates. In 1839-1840 he was taking college classes in Salem, Indiana. There was no college in Salem at that time, but there was a seminary and academy. Or perhaps Andrew Wylie, President of Indiana University at the time, may have offered classes or given lectures in Salem when the university was not in session.Mr. Seals spent time in Indiana and, later, in Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. He was involved with settling an estate in Missouri in 1850, a census of Clayton County, Iowa, in 1860, and the attempt to bring a railroad to Estherville, Iowa, in the early 1870s. By then Mr. Seals was a representative of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Union Pacific Railroad Company. Other than that, few details about his life are available.

In 1909 Mr. Seals’ daughter, Laura S. Seals, loaned this notebook to The Association of Contributors to the Iowa Historical and Education Society. How and when it came to be in UNI’s Special Collections and Archives is unknown. However, in the front of the notebook there is a typed letter from 1943 from Indiana University asking to borrow the book from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI), which indicates it was in our possession by then.

Scope and Content

This is the college notebook of a man named Lindsay Seals. It contains the lecture notes he took for two classes. The first half covers metaphysics as taught by a Dr. Wylie, while the second half has notes from Rhetoric and Oratory. The name of the teacher of this second course is unknown.
