Historical Note
Leon Mosley was born in Amory, Mississippi, on March 1, 1946. When he was one year old, his family moved to Waterloo, where his father began work at Deere & Company. Leon Mosley also worked for Deere & Company when he grew up. In 1990, he was elected to the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors. He has been deeply involved in local and state politics, as well as with many civic groups and local causes.
Scope and Content
Boxes 1-17
The material in the first seventeen, regular-sized, archives boxes of the Mosley Papers (8.5 linear feet) arrived in the University Archives in the middle 1990s in several shipments. Professor John Baskerville, of the University of Northern Iowa history faculty, arranged for the delivery of the papers. Because there was no apparent arrangement to the material, the records processors, University Archivist Gerald L. Peterson and intern Curtis Hanson, grouped the collection into five main categories: Republican Party, Campaign Material, Deere and Company, Civic Work, and Board of Supervisors.
The first category, the Republican Party, is located in Box 1 and contains documents Mosley collected on party news and issues. Campaign Material, found in Box 2, is a collection of letters, campaign flyers, and invitations organized first chronologically and then by candidate. Boxes 3 and 4 contain newsletters, letters, minutes, and other documents related to the Waterloo Waterworks and to Deere & Company. Boxes 5 through 9, Civic Work, document Mosley's extensive work in the community on various issues and boards from 1993 through 1997. The types of documents included in these boxes are letters, meeting minutes, newsletters, invitations, general mailings, and brochures. The final, and largest, group contains materials documenting Mosley's work on the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors. These papers, located in Boxes 10 through 17, contain budget and tax information; meeting minutes and agendas; and documents from offices such as Human Resource Services and Juvenile Detention Services.
Student intern Curtis Hanson processed Boxes 1-17 in the spring of 1998.
Boxes 18-22
Material in these five large archives cartons arrived in the University Archives from about 1999 through 2003. Once again, Professor John Baskerville arranged for their delivery. Because this material showed no apparent organization when it arrived in the Archives, University Archivist Gerald L. Peterson and University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee Library Science graduate student Dana Wallace decided to treat this material as an addendum to the existing collection and to follow the overall arrangement of the existing collection.
Dana Wallace processed these five boxes as part of her fieldwork experience in March and April 2010.
The Mosely papers provide a good look at both Leon Mosely himself and at the matters that he addressed in his public and private life. Because the papers arrived in several batches at different times, and additions were treated as addenda to the collection, researchers may need to go to several parts of the collection in order to cover the same matters.
Access to a few folders in the Mosley collection is restricted because of the nature of the contents.
The collection control file contains a handful of news clippings. Please ask SC&UA staff for access.

Processing Information
University of Northern Iowa Public History intern Curtis Hanson and University Archivist Gerald L. Peterson processed Boxes 1-17 of this collection in the spring of 1998; Gerald Peterson marked up a Web inventory at that time. Intern Dana Wallace, doing her fieldwork for a degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, processed Boxes 18-22 in March and April 2010; Gerald Peterson then revised the Web inventory to reflect the additions to the collection on April 19, 2010. Last updated by Library Associate Dave Hoing, October 2017. Linear feet count updated on August 9, 2017.
