Historical Note

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was a well-known poet and, along with Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, was a founding father of the 20th century Beat generation.

This unpublished poem, "Vroom -- Over White Wisconsin," was written in 1968 by Ginsberg while he was on a flight from Appleton, Wisconsin, to Chicago, Illinois. Ginsberg gave the poem to Cedar Falls Record editor Jim Walde, who was also on the flight. Walde in turn passed it on to Kennie Harris, a University of Northern Iowa student and part-time reporter for the Record. She kept the poem until 2019 before contacting the University of Northern Iowa.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of the unpublished Allen Ginsberg poem, "Vroom -- Over White Wisconsin," dated February 21. The poem is written in red ink on lined paper and describes the Midwest, Lake Michigan, and flying over Chicago. It also touches on the controversial exorcism at Joseph McCarthy's gravesite, which had occurred the day before the poem was written.
