Historical Note

Emily Clara Brown was a history professor at the University of Northern Iowa from 1966-1976, where she also helped start an Indian studies program. She received her bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology from Ohio State University; her masters in education from Arizona State University; and her Ph.D. in history from the University of Arizona in 1967.

Brown pursued a journalism career from 1934 to 1942 in Panama and Arizona. During World War II, she served as a public information officer, "covering WAC activities in the Southwest Pacific and China." She also traveled multiple times to India and chaired a few seminars to the country; worked as a Fulbright professor in journalism and mass communication from 1961-1962; and met Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970. She also spent the summers of 1969 and 1970 researching for her book, Har Dayal, Hindu Revolutionary and Rationalist.

Scope and Content

The entire collection focuses on Brown's book, Har Dayal, Hindu Revolutionary and Rationalist (1975). It consists of a heavily edited and annotated manuscript; a proof of the book; one piece of correspondence from her publisher; and the published version.
