Historical Note

In January 1967, the Advisory Committee on Future Development and Administrative recommended that the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa or UNI) be organized into colleges and accompanying departments. The College of Business and Behavioral Sciences (as it was originally called) was proposed alongside the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the College of Natural Sciences, and the College of Education. This collegiate structure went into effect on July 1, 1968.

The College of Business & Behavioral Sciences included the departments of business and business education, home economics, and the social sciences, including psychology. It was stipulated that the college could later add to its departmental listings and include departments such as anthropology, economics, geography, history, home economics, political science, psychology, and sociology. The business side of the college also had the ability to broaden, with the possibility of adding accounting, business education, finance, management, and marketing departments. Donald Howard served as its first dean from 1968-1972. Visit this link for the complete list.

In July 1979, the college requested its name be changed to the “College of Social and Behavioral Sciences” (CSBS) in order to better reflect the departments with in it, which at that time were economics, geography, history, home economics, political science, psychology, and sociology, anthropology, and social work. The Business Department split from CSBS to become the School of Business, with its own set of departments and college status. Ultimately, the name “College of Business and & Behavioral Sciences” lasted from 1968-1981, and has been the College of Social and & Behavioral Sciences since 1981.

As of April 2020, CSBS “promotes an understanding of how individuals, societies and cultures contribute to human development.” Its departments are: School of Applied Sciences, Geography, History, Military Science / ROTC, Political Science, Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology.
