Historical Note

Classic Upward Bound (CUB) is a program that prepares high school students for success in college. It is funded by both the United States Department of Education and the University of Northern Iowa. CUB's purpose " to promote students' awareness of the possibility of furthering their education beyond high school and to help students become more aware of their self-worth, uniqueness, culture, and individual creativity."

At UNI, students who have finished 8th grade or in in 9th-11th grades from the Waterloo Community School District may apply for CUB. Two-thirds of program applicants must come from low-income and first-generation college families. Program participants are involved in many activities such as recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities, as well as spending six weeks during the summer at UNI, living in dorms and taking classes to help strengthen their academics.
