Scope and Content

Following University of Northern Iowa President Benjamin Allen's announcement of the closing of the Malcolm Price Laboratory School and the University Museum, the Waterloo Courier, the Cedar Rapids Gazette, and television station KCRG, requested and received, under open records laws, electronic mail relating to the closings.  The electronic mail, about 2200 pages, covers the period from December 1, 2011 through March 7, 2012.

The Waterloo Courier printed several articles relating to the electronic mail release, including an article on April 1, 2012, which is included at the head of this collection.  The Courier made the electronic mail available in pdf format on its Web site.  The mail was divided into six folders:  one folder each for University President Benjamin Allen, Provost Gloria Gibson, Dean of the College of Education Dwight Watson, and the University Museum, as well two smaller folders apparently edited to provide easy access by Courier readers.

The Rod Library Information Technologies Department downloaded the files.  The Special Collections and University Archives Division printed them out.  The printouts are arranged as they appeared in the pdf folders.

This collection offers a perspective on the thoughts and considerations of university administrators as they came to their decisions.  It also provides a look at campus and community reactions to those decisions.
