Joseph Herman Anderson graduated from the Iowa State Normal School in 1898. He married Matilda Kiel in 1898 and served as the principal of Fairbank schools. He was clerk of the District Court in Forest City, Winnegago County, Iowa, from 1904 through 1912. He farmed near Thompson, Iowa, beginning in 1916. He served in the Iowa General Assembly, as a representative from Winnebago County, from 1915 through 1925. He was Speaker of the House for the 40th General Assembly. He then served on the State Board of Education of Iowa from 1928 through 1934. He died September 25, 1953.Orland Anderson was a son of Joseph Anderson. He attended the Iowa State Teachers College during the 1920s.
Scope and Content
In April 2013, Verneil Anderson Branstad sent this collection to the University of Northern Iowa. Mrs. Branstad is the daughter of Orland Anderson and the granddaughter of Joseph Anderson. This collection features material relating to Joseph Anderson's time as a student at the Normal School and to his work with the Board of Education. There is also a smaller amount of material relating to Orland Anderson's time as a student at the Teachers College in the mid-1920s.
